The Rising Tide: 2000 Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG w/82k miles

The W210 E55 AMG has been the darling of the rising collectible Mercedes-Benz market for the past couple of years. As seen across nearly all auction platforms and private listings, the prices of the W210 E55 has risen steadily, strongly and has likely yet to peak just yet. To that end, collector's seeking similar power and era-specific build quality have begun to turn their eyes elsewhere for bargain buys in the same realm, and it appears that the W163 is floating to the top.

Offered for sale on Autotrader out of San Francisco, this 2000 ML55 is finished in the classic MB color combination of Brilliant Silver Metallic (764) over Black (561) Exclusive leather interior. The condition of the paint and interior appear excellent in the quality photos provided by the seller; evidencing either a well-detailed or well-maintained and garaged example.

While no mention of prior ownership history or accident/damage history are mentioned in the ad, the VIN is provided, so running a carfax would be key for anyone looking to pay the seller's asking price of $12,000. While that price is not out of line with where many other ML55s have sold recently, this is still a new price trend for the W163 and having the clean history would certainly bolster the seller's case for that figure. For comparison, a number of ML55s in the mid-60k mileage range have sold for mid to high teens on auction sites such as Bring A Trailer. Even a near 50k-mile example sold for just over $20k earlier this year privately.

Recent maintenance includes: New Pirelli Scorpion Verde tires; New Steering Rack (w/ alignment), New Radiator, upper/lower hose, coolant reservoir; New HVAC Actuator Motor;

New A/C condenser, New receiver dryer; New Water pump, Belt tensioner; & Valve cover gaskets. This list indicates what could be a very well sorted ML55; though we'd like to know what suspension work has been done over the past few years as these heavy haulers tend to wear out bushings and arms quickly; especially after 20 years of road use.

The car remains stock aside from a Kenwood DNX8120 double din w/ Navigation & Bluetooth and Dynamat sound dampening installed throughout the interior cabin. Aside from some faded headlight plastics, no immediate needs are visible in the seller's photos. Notably, the seller claims 82k miles in the listing but the odometer shows 79,000. So these excellent photos may be a tad outdated and new photos or an in-person inspection may be warranted.

For those of you on the west coast, this may be worth taking a closer look at as ML55 prices seem to be maintaining their upward trajectory with no signs of slowing down. As the first fast SUV offered on Mercedes' first non-military SUV platform, these models seem like a sound addition to the stable of any collector with an eye towards appreciation.
