Sold New from Lorinser Mercedes-Benz (1979 450SL Lorinser)

By our standards, when we say we’ve found something we don’t see every day, we mean it. Today, we’ve found this 1979 450SL and doesn’t only check obscurity off the list but also manages to achieve rarity and displays top notch-provenance in the Mercedes-Benz community. This R107 is freshly listed in Atlanta, GA here on Facebook Marketplace for $59,500 and it’s worth checking out in full before you assume that’s too high for this roadster showing only 22k miles.

This 1979 Mercedes-Benz 450SL was sold new at Lorinser Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart Germany (Yes, that Lorinser) and imported to the United States by the current owner in 1984. It comes complete with a myriad of ribbons, awards, and trophies including a first place plaque from the Mercedes-Benz Club of America Concours d’Elegance. Also included with this 2-owner example is a binder with complete service history and documented miles.

The car is finished in Brilliant Red Metallic (525) with a black soft top over a beige leather interior and Brilliant Red Metallic hardtop. The seller notes the SL as concours level and it truly shows despite the photos in the listing presenting as less than ideal for a car of this caliber. Every panel is virtually perfect and show no signs of dents, dings, or paintwork. The body is nicely finished with an original Lorinser body kit which was installed by Lorinser Mercedes-Benz along with a set of paint-matched 15” BBS Mahle’s to perfectly compliment this original build.

The interior presents just as nicely in original Beige Leather with matching carpets, door cards, and upper dashboard (a nice change from the mandatory black dash in the later 80’s). All the factory wood retains a nice luster and finish appearing to be well-kept original trim examples. Even the rear jump seats have managed to stay with the car along with the factory Becker Mexico head unit. The cluster, lights, and features are reportedly in great working order.

The seller mentioned several times that this car has not seen rain in 36 years and we’re inclined to believe him after seeing under-body shots of this R107. Some viewers may recognize this car from a previous Bring a Trailer listing where it didn’t meet reserve. Given how special a car and story this R107 is, we feel it wasn’t advertised as it should have been and the complete picture of this listing was lost in the shuffle. We hope this car goes to the home it deserves and from where we’re sitting the asking price isn’t too far off reality.
