Offered for only two years (2005-06) the E55 AMG wagon was available to only 193 lucky customers in the US (129 of them in 2005). Powered by the stone-fisted, supercharged M113K V8 delivering 469 bhp and 516 ft-lbs of torque, this iteration of the AMG W211 feels more true to a "muscle wagon" than its smoother successor, the E63. Much of this has to do with the 5-speed transmission paired to the supercharged powerplant: Power is rough, aggressive and immediate and the screaming whine under the hood let's you know its always there.
This 2005 E55 AMG Wagon is offered on craigslist out of Denver, CO is finished in Cubanite Metallic paint (aka Pewter) over black nappa leather interior with 94k-miles. Having owned an E55 wagon in this exact same spec, I'm partial to this color and it shows much better in person than in the photos.
This example is sparse on photos or details - a concern for any potential buyer of a used AMG; especially one as rare as this one. It lacks certain desirable features on the w211 AMG wagons such as third row seat, keyless go, etc, which brings it down a notch in terms of collectibility. Standard AMG wagon goodies are present - like the alcantara headliner - and it appears to be in decent condition.
The presence of the sun-visor in the rear seating area leads us to believe this car may have spent a lot of time outdoors; so a closer inspection of the paint/exterior condition may be warranted. Being a Denver car, underbody inspection will be a must for any potential buyer as well. The original COMMAND head unit appears to have been replaced with an aftermarket double-din unit, so hopefully the owner retained the original parts for eventual reinstallation.
Priced at $28,000, this 94,000 mile car needs a lot more detail to warrant that retail pricing. The seller claims that the "air shocks" (airmatic), rear main seal and supercharger bearing have all been "done". But without records for these repairs (and many other maintenance items) this could be an expensive gamble. In our opinion, if the carfax is clean and records are present, this car is a buy all day long at around $25k...even with the lackluster options and aftermarket head unit.
