Offered for sale here on craigslist out of Sarasota, FL, this Euro-spec R107 has a ton of plusses to make it a potentially great buy.
Ordered out of Dusseldorf in late 1984, this sleek roadster looks incredible with AMG-style bodykit, euro turn signal lenses, euro headlights and a wood Nardi steering wheel. The Black (040) over Palomino (254) color combination strikes the perfect balance of refined aggressiveness to suit this mean-looking classic.
While full Palomino leather, as opposed to cloth, is rare to find on a european 280sl of this period, this car also features some really interesting factory options for the model including electric windows, factory rear "kinder seats" (565), automatic climate control and heated front seats. While these options were common to see on the V-8 variants of the R107 at the time, these options are certainly surprising to find on a 280.
The seller claims that his aunt, for whom he is presumably selling the car, was only the second owner when she purchased it in 1992. As such, the listing touts that a "stack of records" is included with the car; certainly a value add on any classic MB.
Having only traveled a reported 64,000 miles over the years, the ability to verify those miles through service records would absolutely support this car's asking price of $17,500.
While the seller gives no indication (or photos) to support the notion that the body kit is an authentic AMG kit, underbody photos show what appear to be white AMG springs on the car (along with some period-stickered Bilstein shocks). This is extremely interesting and could indicate that this was a real AMG cosmetic conversion either in Germany or upon its arrival in the US in the early 90s. Only a closer inspection will tell the tale...
The later 560sl wheels look very nice on the car but aren't doing it any favors in terms of value. A set of period correct pentas, OZs or even Lorinser LOs would go a long way to making this little roadster a real head turner.
All in all this is an extremely attractive package that, with some verification and negotiation, could be an excellent buy in today's rising pre-merger market.
