Honoring Car Week: The Auctions

The 2020 Monterey Car Week & Concours has long been postponed. Fortunately for those of us still interested in the action and excitement of the week's auctions can still scratch the itch with the two "Online Only" sales being held by RM Sotheby's and Bonhams Auctioneers. With our exclusive First-Look at the 1994 Mercedes E60 AMG currently being auctioned at the RM Sotheby's Sale, we thought you might enjoy a detailed look at what else is in store for this week (Mercedes-specific, of course), despite not being able to be there in person.

Starting with the RM Sotheby's SHIFT/Monterey sale, there no shortage of heavy-hitters on offer. A pair of beautifully presented 300SL Roadsters headline the lineup, along with a fitting entry from a more modern SL(S) to fill the void of having those iconic Gullwing doors - the SLS AMG Black Series.

RM is also offering a pair of "Youngtimer" heavyweights in the form of Widebody goodness, with a beautifully presented 1994 E60 AMG Limited (See link above for our feature on it), and a 1989 "Widebody" 560SEC 5.6 AMG with some very evident cosmetic needs.

Less mainstream offerings on the docket for this week's sale include a very unique 1959 O 319 Custom Camper conversion that really has us daydreaming of upcoming Fall getaways, and an absolutely stunning 1956 300 Sc Coupe decorated in beautifully finished wood and chrome trimmings.

Rounding off the docket at RM are a trio of beautiful convertibles, each of which deserving of their place at the most highly-coveted auction of the year. These include a beautifully restored 1957 190SL, a matching numbers 1971 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet, and a recent star on the rise, a last year production 1989 560SL (R107) with just over 20,000Miles from new (and it looks it!)

Bonhams offers a rather different selection to those offered at RM, with a mix of some very modern Mercedes models, as well as some on the much older end of the spectrum - including some pre-war and brass era cars. Oddly enough, both auctions offer a few particular similarities that should make for an interesting price comparison when the dust settles, including a 1955 300SL Gullwing with the proper doors, a narrow-body 1987 560SEC AMG, a very elegant 1967 250SE Coupe, and unbelievably (at least to us) another 1956 300 Sc as well! (Except this one is 1 of just 53 Roadsters).

Always fascinating to see up close, however unfortunately we can not be present to see some of the Pre-war and Brass era cars on offer in person - and there are some truly beautiful selections in this year's line-up. Including a 1926 Sports Phaeton, a 1929 Model 630 Ktown car, and a 1914 Four Passenger Runabout. Headlining the Silver Star line-up, is a Pebble Beach award winning 1936 500K Offener Tourenwagen. Being one of just 16 "Tourenwagens" ever produced, with some exceptional history, matching numbers, and finished in an absolutely jaw-dropping shade of dark green, this is one we would have gladly paid the entry-fee for had we been at the Quail lodge this week.

Lastly, If you happen to find yourself looking for a modern classic, but don't feel like venturing down to your local Certified Pre-owned dealership, then perhaps either the 2018 C63 AMG Cabrio or the (world's most bad-ass grocery-getter) E63-S AMG Wagon are on your bid list for this week's auction. Are you notoriously late when trying to get the kids loaded up for school or soccer practice? Then perhaps the 550hp 2015 GL63 AMG family hauler is for you. Or are you less concerned with being late, given that you are likely the most important person at the event? Well then Bonhams also has you covered with a 2017 Maybach S550.

Although we could not be together in person, we, here at The MB Market, would like to wish everyone a Happy Car Week! Hoping to see you all in Monterey in 2021! Let us know what you think of this year's auction selection, and good luck to anyone bidding!
